Independence Skills: Case Studies

09th December from 14:00 to 15:30

Case Study 1:

Teaching self-management of stereotype and delayed echolalia using differential reinforcement, self-monitoring and social stories:

A seven year old boy with autism diagnosis was taught to self-monitor his own behaviour and recognise intervals of time when he was and was not engaging in stereotypy (hand-flapping, running and clapping) and self-talk. Within a Differential Reinforcement of Other behaviour (DRO) treatment plan the student learned to use break-times on his own to engage in self-stimulatory behaviour, and during individual and group instruction learned to remain on-task in the absence of behaviour that had previously hindered his learning and integration.

Generalisation was facilitated through the use of social stories. A multiple baseline design was utilised and results are discussed with reference to the relevant research literature.

Case Study 2:

A Shaping procedure to teach drinking from a cup

A shaping procedure and token economy were successfully used to facilitate change in drinking utensils, from bottle to cup, used by a five year old boy. The treatment was conducted with cooperation between home and school. The procedure, results, and generalisation planning are discussed with reference to the relevant research literature.
